Minority Teacher Recruitment and Retention

Panel: Gary Highsmith, Hamden Public Schools, Dr. Terrell Hill, Windsor Public Schools, & Dr. Verna Ruffin, Waterbury Public Schools

School districts are looking at alternative routes to certification for minority teacher candidates. Candidates are often paraprofessionals or hold a college degree, but no teacher certification. These alternative routes are approved educator preparation programs with fellowship or residency programs and mentors to support candidates that will get them teaching more quickly than the traditional route.

HR Best Practices – W-2, W-4, Background Checks

This session will cover key HR issues including changes to the W-2 and W-4 forms, background check requirements for substitute teachers, what should and shouldn’t be in a personnel file, how to respond to requests for references, etc.

The CSDE has developed valuable resources for use by districts to assist in talent recruitment, especially in terms of minority staff. Learn what is available and how to enhance your district’s recruitment.

Best Practices in Financial Education for Staff

The National Tax-Deferred Savings Association (NTSA) has created an outstanding presentation on the basics of investing, the importance of saving for retirement, and expectations for retirement. Experience this brief presentation to see how it can be of value in your district.

Schedule, topics, and speakers are subject to change.  Program outcomes:  Attendees will gain a better knowledge of recruitment, HR, and financial education.  This workshop will provide attendees with .5 CEU credits.  To qualify for full CEU credits; you must sign-in by 9:00 a.m. and sign-out no earlier than 3:00 p.m.  To qualify for .3 CEU credits, you must sign-in by 9:00 a.m. and sign-out no earlier than 12:00 p.m.
